Our previous pick was the Energy Take Classic, which had been called by CNET, “the best budget speaker system we’ve reviewed.” Sound+Vision’s Ken Pohlmann felt that “In a small or midsize room, the Take Classic will perform beautifully,” and “Throw in its classy black finish, and you’ve got a small, value-priced package.” Mark Fleischmann of Home Theater magazine said “That makes it a strong performer with music as well as movie content in which music is prominent,” concluding, “It came as no surprise to me that Energy’s Take Classic speaker package was such a fine all-around performer. The brand has a strong track record in sat/sub packages, and this set continues the tradition.”.
On the outside, the Monoprice and Energys look almost identical. Matthew Moskovciak and Steve Guttenberg reviewed the 9774’s for CNET, having previously reviewed the Take Classics. From their Monoprice review: “Putting the Monoprice 9774 speakers side-by-side with the Energy Take Classic 5.1 set it’s truly striking. Nearly everything — from the finish, to the placement of the drivers, to the positioning of the speaker connectors — is identical.”.
“Our listening tests confirmed that the Monoprice 9774 offers performance that’s nearly identical to the Energy Take Classic 5.1 system’s. While it’s always tough to say that any two products sound exactly alike, these two systems were about as close as you can get when we listened to them side-by-side in the same room. Perhaps the Energy satellite’s treble was a tiny bit sweeter, but that’s splitting hairs and even tiny placement or manufacturing disparities could explain the difference.”.
Since I had both systems in my lab, I took a listen to as well, just to be sure. I concur with Matt and Steve. The differences are so slight, that they’re likely just the differences between any two different sets of speakers (even from the same brand). Interestingly, I too felt the Energy satellite’s tweeter was, as they said “tiny bit sweeter,” (smoother, in layman’s terms) but it was incredibly slight.
